Lawn Maintenance & Renovation

Aeration, overseeding, bare-spot repair and full turf restoration for lawns that need more than mowing.

The short answer

Lawn renovation in Milwaukee means core aeration and overseeding in early fall, when soil is warm and weed pressure is low. ALT Landscaping repairs bare spots, thin turf, salt damage and heavy-clay compaction across Milwaukee County. Most residential aeration and overseeding jobs are completed in a single visit. Mowing keeps a lawn tidy. It does not fix a lawn that is thin, patchy, compacted or losing ground to weeds. That takes renovation work, and in southeastern Wisconsin the window for it is narrower than most homeowners realize.

What’s included

  • Core aerationPulling plugs relieves the compaction that heavy Milwaukee-area clay creates, and opens the soil so water, air and fertilizer actually reach the root zone.
  • OverseedingCool-season seed blends matched to sun exposure, applied straight into freshly aerated soil for real seed-to-soil contact.
  • Bare-spot and damage repairDog spots, salt burn along drives and walks, shaded thin areas and last winter's plow scars.
  • Grade and drainage fixesLow spots that hold water get filled and re-established rather than mowed around.
  • Full turf restorationWhen a lawn is more weed than grass, starting over with sod or a full seed renovation is often cheaper than three years of patching.

Lawn Maintenance & Renovation questions, answered

When is the best time to aerate a lawn in Wisconsin?

Late August through late September is the strongest window. Soil is still warm enough for fast germination, nights are cooling, and annual weeds like crabgrass have stopped competing. Spring aeration works but opens the soil right as crabgrass is germinating, so fall is preferred wherever the schedule allows.

Why is my Milwaukee lawn so hard and compacted?

Most of the Milwaukee area sits on heavy clay soil. Clay compacts under foot traffic, mowers and winter freeze-thaw cycles, which squeezes out the air pockets roots need. Core aeration is the standard fix, and on badly compacted lawns it is worth repeating annually for two or three seasons.

Will overseeding fix my weeds?

Partly, and it is the durable half of the answer. Thick turf crowds weeds out, so overseeding into aerated soil is the long-term fix. Existing broadleaf weeds still need treatment first, otherwise new seedlings compete with established weeds and lose.
