This is the work Adolfo likes most, and it shows. A flower bed is where a property stops looking maintained and starts looking cared for, but only if the plants are right for the light, the soil and a Wisconsin winter.

Flower Beds & Garden Care questions, answered
What flowers survive Milwaukee winters?
Milwaukee is USDA Hardiness Zone 5b, with average annual lows between −15°F and −10°F. Reliable perennials here include coneflower, black-eyed Susan, daylily, hosta, sedum, Russian sage, salvia, catmint and native prairie species. Anything rated Zone 5 or lower will overwinter without protection in most Milwaukee yards.
When should I cut back my perennials?
Either late fall after a hard frost, or early spring before new growth pushes. Leaving stems standing through winter feeds birds and shelters beneficial insects, and it looks better than bare mulch in January. ALT Landscaping can handle it in either the fall cleanup or the spring cleanup.
Can you plant a privacy screen along my property line?
Yes. Arborvitae is the standard choice around Milwaukee, fast, evergreen, tolerant of clay, and available in narrow varieties for tight setbacks. Spacing, mature width and deer pressure all get factored in before anything is planted. Ask for a free walkthrough.
